On January 31, 2000, the former State Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision approved Shaoxing wine to be listed in the protection catalogue of products of origin. Shaoxing Huangjiu has also become the first product to be listed in the protection catalogue in China. Six Huangjiu enterprises, namely Gu Yue Long Shan, Kuai Ji Shan, Pagoda, COFCO, Nv Er Hong, Wang Bao He, were approved to use the special mark of origin for registration. And later the scope was expanded to 14 enterprises. Therefore, consumers need to distinguish clearly the difference between Shaoxing Huangjiu and Huangjiu made in Shaoxing.

Shaoxing has been a wine town since ancient times. It is located around Jianhu Lake. Every family has the fragrance of Huangjiu. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with the development of commodity economy, the scale of brewing was gradually expanded, and the wineries gradually occupied the main position. In 1934, Shaoxing Huangjiu was at its peak. According to records, there were 2246 wineries in Shaoxing at that time, which concentrated in Dongpu, Ruanshe, Keqiao, Shaoxing City, Gaobu, Dongguan and other places. According to the records of China Industrial History (1933 Edition), there were 68 wineries with an annual output of more than 300 jars at that time.
Among these wineries, many famous brands had emerged, such as Zhangdongming Winery, Gaochangxing Winery, Maowanmao Winery, Maodasheng Winery, Zhangzhangji Winery, Shanyuantai Winery, Zhangxinghao Winery, Tianderun Winery, Liwanchun Winery, Zhang's Qingji Winery, Tian's Zhongji Winery, Zhangwanrun Winery, Yewanyuan Winery, Yunji Winery, Xiaozhen Winery and Tangyuanyuan Winery. It is worth mentioning that Yunji Winery won the gold medal of 1915 Panama International Exposition. In Shaoxing City, the most famous winery is Shenyonghe Winery, which was founded in 1664. In 1910, it won the gold award of Nanyang Business Promotion Association. And its branches are all over the major cities in China.
