The packaging of Shaoxing yellow rice wine

Fastidious care has been given to the packaging of Shaoxing Yellow Rice Wine. First, the jars to be filled should be washed clean and dried. Then their exteriors are painted with whitewash, which makes the containers not only pleasing to the eye, but also has a sterilizing effect. After the whitewash dries up, it is imprinted with marks indicating the producer, type, weight, batch number and production date. Before the jars are filled, both the jars and the old wine are steamed to disinfect. Then the jars are covered with lotus leaves (to give them a faint scent) at their mouths before erigeron-shaped lids (which support other jars on and above them when they are piled together) are installed. Then a Fangdan, or`workshop sheet' with a seal print, which indicates the name and history of the producer, the type and brewing techniques of the wine, the workshop owner's name,and the registered trademark, is placed. After that, the jars are wrapped up with bamboo pieces which are bound with bamboo splits. At last, mud mixed with grain husks is applied to the lids. It is not until then that a packaging process is initially completed.
